Chas.
I just got my new driver's license this past week and it expires in 2012!

Now, being a natural blonde, I'm not real sure, but I think that's more than 5 years. :?:

Oops  , you're right; TDL's are good for 6 years. I should have said "changed" to 5 years, not "increased" to 5 years. If TDL's were to remain good for 6 years and the TDL and CHL were combined, then we'd lose the NICS exemption for CHL's.

Sorry for the mistake,
Chas.

I just renewed my TDL too and was happy to see 2012 on the new one. It would be great if they were combined w/ CHL.

What does NICS stand for?

NICS = National Instant Check System; i.e. the Brady Instant Background Check. CHL holders are exempt if their state's law meets certain requirements, including a duration of no more than 5 years.

When I get time, I need to delve into the law on that one. I believe it's the background check portion of the license that must be less than 5 years old. If that's the case, there's no reason (other than politics) why we couldn't switch to the Indiana-style "permit for life", with 5 year background checks.

Could be a good intermediate step towards Alaska-style.
