It get's better... I had to take three of my classmates to the range the day before we qualified for a full on, basic handgun class. My wife had a broader firearms knowledge base than any of those three "instructors" at the time. And somewhere on here you'll find my account of the most recent Instructor Renewal class. Personally, I am investing in rigid body-armor for my future visits to DPS.
This is both funny and scary. This explains some of the comments and questions that people have posted after taking their CHL classes. I was fortunate to have one of the best. That one guy must have been quite a fisherman.

How about if you don't like the rules don't go???
Just because a rule that someone has doesn't fit what you want, doesn't mean go question someone on it. Show some civility. Will it ruin your day to go spend $20 on a box of ammo?
It's probably more so someone doesn't buy reloads at a gun show and bring some crap ammo in. I made the mistake of buying reloads at a gun show once. after about 10% of the rounds failed to fire I threw the rest out and have gone with new ammo and have yet to have a failure.

Why don't you show some civility? What is wrong with asking a simple question? Maybe we can all learn something?

Actually yes it did ruin my day, because I had money set aside to send to the state but now I have to wait 2 weeks to do that. I went out and spent the money on regular ammo. Did you miss the fact that I spent a couple hundred dollars on ammo supplies less than 2 weeks ago, so I would be ready? Wouldn't have done it if I couldn't use it.

I honestly would not have even cared if I had been told in advance. It is the fact I come in to shoot 1-2 a week since the beginning of July and then told the day of the class at the end of the class that no re loads allowed. Aggrevating.

Don't get me wrong hubby says it is all mental, I can shoot a sheet of paper 8x11 and not miss, with any ammo. I just prefer the re loads they seem to be more accurate. I know I am not the only person to say this or feel this way.

To late to do anything about it now so no reason to dwell on it. And I think I was civil, all I did was ask a question about it and respond to responses.

Now, that's a plan with merit. ;-)

I don't know if it's a regular practice for most instructors, but mine did. It was at an indoor range, and he went to each lane and had us set our guns down and inspected each one before we started the proficiency test.
I do this with every group. I inspect the guns and I make the student demonstrate their knowledge of operating their particular weapon. It takes a little more time on the front end, but it gives me an opportunity to give them pointers or correct problems that may interrupt the proficiency test. I've never failed anyone because they couldn't operate their weapon. We always work through it and I get them through the test. Even older students with weak or arthritic hands pass the test. I make them show me that they CAN load a magazine or lock back the slide, then I or my wife help them load up during the test.

I run across a weapon that just isn't safe or operable from time to time. (A couple of months back, a gentleman had a Highpoint 9mm that would literally fire about a half to a full second after pulling the trigger!!!) We can provide them with a gun that's in good, safe working order BEFORE the test starts. I'm very particular about what my students have on the bench, how they put out their ammo, how they place their gun on the bench, etc. My proficiency test is probably a little harder than some other instructors, but I use this as an opportunity to teach, rather than a means of failing the student. It's all in the interest of safety.
