Funny thing happened to me at the GRB this last weekend...

Post by stevie_d_64 »

Ok, right or wrong, thick or thin...I did something this last weekend that took me a while to realize I might have done something a little out of the norm, yet...Nobody in authority had too much of a problem with it...

We all knew there was a gunshow this last weekend at the GRB convention center...We all know the rules and or regs regarding carry at certain events in that government owned and operated facility...

Here's what I did...

I went there with my noobie and his son to just go for the fun of it and see what jumped out at us to say "BUY ME!"

Anyway, I knew they would have a policy of unloaded firearms in the facility and the event, so I unloaded and reholstered the "Piledriver" (a.k.a.-Springfield 1911) and kept the ammo separate from the firearm...Because I knew I could get it zipp tied when I got inside the gunshow...

Here's the neat thing...We got in and both had our holstered firearms cleared and zipp tied...We put them back away and concealed under our Hawaiian shirts...And got ready to proceed upon our way...

The HPD officer zipp tying my weapon, mentioned that it might have been a problem me bringing my gun into the event, and that if I was Law Enforcement that might be ok since I was undercover (civilian clothing)??? The only thing I said was that I was not L.E. and that I said in a jockular tone that I didn't want to leave my weapon in the vehicle outside the event...My noobie has not invested in any vehicle safes or other devices to secure these items...

I had no initial intention to do anything with the weapon at the event, I believed it would be more secure on my person, than sitting under a seat in a vehicle...

He (HPD) apparently didn't have a problem with that and we said nothing else to each other, and we proceeded on our way...

Anyway, I didn't give it much thought till after we left, and thought y'all would enjoy knowing that once again the Steve-miester unknowingly busted some myths about this issue...

The event actually did have a properly posted 30.06 sign at the entrance... :headscratch

But since this is a gunshow, and that people (non-vendors) bring weapons into the event to sell, trade or have fixed or modified at the event, I am kinda thinking the whole issue of bringing guns into a gunshow should not be considered such a terrible thing by some people...

Admittedly I am fearless in my thoughts and actions (right or wrong), and figured this would be interesting for some to just read and think about how all the discussions we have on issues in the past, and have someone actually test some things, not intending to do anything wrong, yet in some way you go thru a system like this and nothing actually bad happen to you, to me is a little comforting...Again, just my opinion...

I carry that way at the shows up here all the time. I unload and have them zip-tie it at the door, then re-holster and go on in. The only difference is they ask specifically here if you have any ammo on you. Kinda silly since you can buy it (maybe) and a mag in the show and be right back in business. For that matter you could buy the whole kit-and-caboodle at the show, load up and go blasting away if you were so inclined. :???:

What is: My noobie?

Same as: My homie?

Is this an inferior or superior position?

Honestly, my lexicon includes little jargon, so I'm in the dark regarding such.

Thanks

"noobie" - noo-bee (adj.) 1. a person claimed by persons of knowledge and experience to be new to a hobby, sport or activity. 2. an apprentice.

I went last weekend also. I find it contradictory that you have a table on one side to check your weapon and and zip-tie it and right across from the table is a legal 30.06 sign at the entrance going into the hall.

I wish I'd have gone to that show. I was in Houston with my girlfriend's family, and her parents are talking about getting their CHLs.

The dad suggested we go to the gun show, since he's wanting to get something for carry and suitable for qualifying (he only has revolvers). So off we headed... to Pasadena. Only to find out that the GRB was going on the same weekend and most of the vendors were there. The only pistol we found of interest to him was a Bersa Thunder .380, used, with a ridiculous price of $565 (over $200 above NEW retail!). We passed on it, and looked around without any luck. Lots of junk guns - The Jimenez showing was overpowering, along with Hi-Points and lots of other cheap off-brand stuff. Oh, and plenty of Desert Eagles.

And then I get back in town and see someone in Houston had a listing for a Thunder .380 CC with 4 mags, holster, mag carrier, and ammo here on the board for less than the bare and worn gun at the show. :banghead:

I have posted numerous times about my experience with GRB. Take your gun unloaded with you from your car (mag and ammo in pocket), have handgun zip-tied by officer and if asked declare that you also have ammo (I was asked) and officer puts your ammo/mag in a plastic cup along with a ticket and hands you a ticket with a matching number so that you may retrieve your ammo on the way out. Very simple and no questions asked by the officer. I also noticed a few other cups with ammo in them next to where he set mine! :thumbs2: I went on and cut the zip tie when I was outside of the GRB and then if you percieve a threat your mag/ammo is right there in your pocket ready to go.

Just go upstairs and unload in the restroom, reverse the procedure when you are done with your show.

there were times that i forgot to retrieve ammo & mag. i had to walk all the way back from my car.

I leave the parking lot with an empty chamber... then remove the mag and lock the slide before I enter GRB.

I have the officer zip tie my sidearm and then I reholster... the first time cops asked if I had a magazine on me, I answered truthfully. The cop chose to make an example of me by yelling and criticizing me in front of everyone. He stole my magazine and gave me a ticket to recover it upon departing. -- That's what you get for telling the truth. :mad5 :mad5 :mad5 Good thing I had a spare mag in my pocket.

Ever since that incident, if Cops ask if I have a magazine on me and I simply smile and say no. Thanks to the attitudes of HPD cops, I am encouraged to lie to police, or more importantly, not say anything at all.

Not to mention, I'm pretty sure GRB is owned by the city, but I am not positive.
