One of the landscaping contractors I deal with here at work decided to get his CHL and was asking me about it. We got on the subject of what CCW I used/prefered, and I went on my XD sermon.

He was hesitant, but then made up his mind on an XD in the flavor of .357 SIG in a 4" Compact size.

He got it in yesterday and went and shot it. He called me.



He absolutely loves the gun, and couldn't thank me enough for pointing him in that direction. He was happier than a pig in....mud.


Just thought I would share.

He's not (yet) as big a shooter as the rest of us, so I don't think that was a big concern of his up front. I did warn him, however, of the addictive properties of the trigger.

He says that he intends to put 50 to 100 rounds through it a year, to stay proficient. I chuckled. We'll see. I'll mention the option of slapping a .40 S&W barrel in there to him, I bet he'll appreciate it.

Also, his wife took the class with him, and her license is forthcoming. I'm now on the hunt for an XD Sub-Compact in 9mm for her.

Out of curiosity....why would a new shooter select .357 SIG as their first caliber? Nothing wrong with the cartridge, but it is somewhat more esoteric. He does understand it's different than the .357 magnum right?

I was wondering the same thing. With the ammo shortages, I would think that it would be difficult to regularly find it in stock.

Same sit with me. I bought my 1st gun (LCP) because I only had an interest in carrying, not shooting. That changed the first time I went to the range, hence the .22 and 9MM that lives here now.

Don't misunderstand me-I love the LCP and it gets more travel time than any of her siblings.

Is this even possible? To "stay proficient" by firing only 50 to 100 rounds per year? I know that's not enough muscle-memory training for me. I easily shoot ten times that, and I'm an average shooter at best.

Perhaps I'm just a slow learner. Need to find out when the short bus picks up people like me to go to the range

I was thinking the same thing. Don't know much about the caliber except I know it's hard to find. TAM made a good suggestion.

It takes 100 rounds per month just to stay at current level of proficiency. It take more than 100 rounds per month plus coaching to improve proficiency.

500-1000 rounds/repetitions for habits and 1000-2000 rounds/repetitions to start muscle memory.

I think he became interested in it when I told him about the one I used to have.

I had an XD .357 SIG 4" with a rad trigger job, and a ported barrel and vented slide. Just a neat gun. I also told him all about the caliber, so he didn't go into this blind. He knows what it is.

That's why I added the "I chuckled". He'll definitely need more trigger time, and I think he'll come to understand this when we go to the range in a week or two.

By no means am I an expert marksman, but I can hit what I shoot at consistently. Hopefully he'll see the wisdom in a range visit a month; at minimum.

I'd be willing to bet that after I mention it to him, he'll end up getting the .40 S&W barrel.

Have the XD in .357sig and really like it. Have had no problem finding ammo though it is a bit more expensive than .40 cal. Guess not many people shoot this caliber and I had to order pistol and wait 5 months for it to come in.
If he buys a .40 cal bbl he will also have to purchase recoil spring as it and the .357sig are not the same. However the .357sig mags will work with .40cal ammo so that saves some money.
