The Holidays Approach

Post by Roger Howard »

I know every one knows this, BUT, just a reminder to everyone to raise their awareness level a notch. Tis getting to be the season for BG's to pray on the sheep. I have already seen the robbery season on the rise. Especially in the North Eastern States.

Someone pass on to Santa that I want an XD for christmas

Very good reminder. Early shoppers are already out. Halloween is a really active time for the BGs too.
I just happen to have an appointment w/ ol St Nick today so will drop a tiny hint in conversation. ;-)

if you go shopping, take a car with a trunk. in a sea of vehicles to choose from, any thug will take the easy way out, and pick the vehicle where items are readily visible. HIDE YOUR STUFF! people crimes are really pretty rare. why leave a witness? property crimes abound for the lack of one.

and not to offend or anything, but you shouldn't have to 'raise your alertness' just due to the season. you should ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings, people around you, and most importantly, be prepared.

We must keep in mind that to a lot of people their "Christmas Spirit" is to go steal something so they can give their mother a Christmas present.

I do find it sad that the season of Love and Forgiveness is one of the highest crime periods during the year.

First let me say to Mr. Howard that I'll not set on any man's lap for you!

Second move your car if you leave one store and go into another. My car was broken into last year after putting gifts from one store in the trunk and then going into another store in the same strip. They got nothing because I don't have an inside trunk release but it took me half a day to replace the little rear window.

While working in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area, I was alerted to the rash of thieves popping trunks open in hotel, restaurant, and mall lots.

Two co-workers lost company laptops out of trunks.

Keeping your stuff out of sight is fine, but if you park and then put stuff in the trunk, the BG in the lot watching can see you.

Just a thought.

Not only that, but in the Houston area the crooks are watching you load your car at Conn's, Best Buy, etc., then following you in a car to wherever you stop next! Always try to go home to unload before you go to another store or stop at a restaurant for lunch.

Or, just be aware of who is around you when you're on the road. If you think someone is following you, drive to a police station. They typically go on to less aware targets once you do that.
If they're that stupid, let the cops have them.

VP
I agree being aware includes checking your rear view mirror. People become lax about security once they start moving. Awareness is 24/7

Could not have said it better.

I believe that you DO need to kick up your vigilance, as you are now a potentially better target...

the distinct possibility exists that they will take the entire car and everything in it, but there are more opportunistic crooks, than full-time crooks. what you cited is not necessarily the norm. you can't be 100% protected, but keeping things out of sight will stop opportunity crimes.

I often shop alone, which is a bad idea anyway.
The day after Thanksgiving, however, I go with Mom.
She and I are the die-hards you see waiting in line for Wal-Mart to open at 5:00 a.m.
We take my step-dad's two-way radios that they take hunting and we do our own "hunting". Despite always lecturing me, Mom is often in condition white. I'll work on her more this year.
