And just the other night, on TXCN, while the store invasion robber pointed a pump shotgun at the clerk, the voice over announcer said it was a rifle.

In the ghetto, they're called clips. In the civilized world, they're called magazines. Either way, everyone knows what you are talking about (and even those that know the difference know what you are talking about).

Speaking for myself, I do not assume, if you say clip, that you are talking about a magazine, but if that proves to be so, I then do assume that either laziness or poor education has played a part in your conversation.

Just like any other nomenclature, if you misuse it, there are people who will not understand what you mean. Clarity calls for proper usage.

Right on, Jim! In the current context i would certainly expect this of a gunner's mate, but you go on to make your point into a general observation, and it has been demonstrated to be so true, time and time again.

Your wife is correct, you read a magazine and she wears a clip in her hair. The only answer left is it is called the thing that holds the bullets. I will have to call springfield for one and see if I can get a free subscription to "Guns and Ammo"!!

The overall war on distinguishing "clip" from "magazine" has long since been lost for practical purposes. Handy to know if you are writing an article, but otherwise, meh.

In a world where a semi-auto rifle or a shotgun with a pistol grip is an "assault weapon," clip vs. magazine is way down on the list of nomenclature to fuss about.

Not necessarily. Submarines are boats, not ships. Submarines consider all ships as targets.

....Not true. Because the ship (destroyer) that I am on, which the submarine/boat thinks is a target, has deployed a torpedo- or nuke depth charge-laden helicopter that is hovering above your periscope.

Highly unlikely, skimmer Sawdust. The way you skimmers pound the water with your active sonars we hear you a hundred miles away. By the time you hear the screws from the Mk 48 ADCAP torpedoes you might as well bend over.....you know the drill.

In basic training at Fort Polk, La. back in 1967 we were told by our Drill Sargent to go to the supply room and be issued our magazines (M-14) One guy from a big city up north (the city so nice they named it twice) came back all in a huff. He said, "They didn't have any magazines all they gave me were these gun clips." The Drill Sargent heard him and after many push-ups and much ridicule he was known as "gun clips" until we graduated.
