The M1 Carbine might appeal to more criminals, being smaller and lighter. Problem is that ammo is sorta hard to come by for those. (Not completely unavailable, but you have to scrounge a bit for it, I think.)
You are right. Not many crimes are committed with "assault rifles," so it's ulikely they're going to lug a real battle rifle down to the 7-11 to clean out the cash register.
