Nor have I. But that may be just because criminals have no taste in weapons. An M1 is one heck of a weapon, despite being an antique. A Springfield M1A is very high on my wish list. I've considered an M1 from the CMP. I probably won't do much hunting with it.
The M1 Carbine might appeal to more criminals, being smaller and lighter. Problem is that ammo is sorta hard to come by for those. (Not completely unavailable, but you have to scrounge a bit for it, I think.)
You are right. Not many crimes are committed with "assault rifles," so it's ulikely they're going to lug a real battle rifle down to the 7-11 to clean out the cash register.

Since these rifles where given to South Korea then it's already considered a monetary loss on the US end. If they are allowed to sell these rifles back to US citizens it would greatly help our ally and if there is a import tax imposed the the US then they can at least recover a portion of their previous loss. It's a much better alternative then just destroying them. This administration is always talking about how important it is to decrease the deficit. Well this was their perfect opportunity to make a dent. Also the argument they make by saying they don't want these weapons to go to the wrong hands is moot. The knee-jerk reaction is that money has no real bearing on anything. If it is gun-related it is bad, regardless of the potential revenue-generating, deficit-fighting impact that the sale of these guns in the US might represent.
Besides, how many folks on this board really think that the current administration (and apparently our own State Department) have any concerns about balancing the Federal budget?

The M1 Carbine is a great little rifle. It's easy to clean and maintain, not that it needs much maintenance. It’s a heck of a lot more dependable than any AR I’ve ever handled. It’s not much for stopping power compared to the .223 but when I was a kid, I took many deer with the one my dad carried in Korea. It has similar ballistic characteristics as the .357 magnum.

Mine has never jammed once, not ever. No matter how dry I let it get it still runs like a champ. I certainly can’t say that about my ARs.

The only hiccup these days are that ammo is scarce. By scarce I mean that there is none being sold as surplus any more and the stuff we purchase is very expensive compared to other calibers.

I’ll certainly get a couple more myself when they come online.

The original short mag however developed a weak mag spring but it was at least 50 years old when it happened. It simply wouldn't feed the very last round in the mag. My original long mag works just fine.

Very old long mags were the worst- the feed lips relax, and you end up with an unfired round (or five) among all your fired brass.
