I had to get away from using foam this last time. The thinness of the foam between the guns got so that it made the guns unstable. When I started with just 3 and then 4 foam was ok, but there just isn't enough material left with 6 to make things stable.

This last go round, I used 1x6 and cut them out. Two for the base, one solid on the bottom and the top base piece cut out for the butt of the gun. Two pieced against the back wall as well. For the shorter guns I only cut a barrel grove in the front piece and the tip of the barrel rests against the back piece of 1x6. For the larger guns, both 1x6's were cut for the barrel and the tip of the barrel rests against the back of the safe.

I actually got the idea from this website. http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRacks05.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
I had previously built a 12 handgun rack for the big safe. I have it pushed toward the back with the pistols in it and the magazines lay in front of each pistol they go with. I don't think in the small safe there is enough room to make a rack for mags below the guns, but I just checked in the big safe and I have a new project. There is plenty of room to build storage below the rack that is in there.
Just remember shot placement is much more important with what you shoot than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

I would get one of those wire shelf racks at wally world. Then you could cut the legs off at about 2-3 inches, and use that space to store the mags. It looks like you have a few inches above your gun foam. We use those wire racks for all sorts of stuff. We have our entire pantry lined with them, and it can easily double the available space. They're cheap but strong.

I'd take a pic of our pantry, but that would be hijacking your thread....

Isn't it hard to get those bolts out in the middle of the night? :biggrinjester:

I'm a HF addict and did not know they had such a thing.
Looks like just what I need for my handguns, and it's only 13" wide.

thanks!
