Shoot them side by side at night, and then I would love to hear your opinion.. Well that’s not a position i thought would be seen here in this forum
So, have any of those claiming to know it's a bad idea to use ported 3" (Snubbie) .357 revolver used or potentially used at night have any ACTUAL experience in shooting that gun and a like one un-ported at night?
Anyone? I can’t be the only person on this forum to have done so.. Come on, share your observations

Re: LCR Fail
You did not misunderstand my response.
I don't need or want a comparison test.
I decided on no porting for two reasons:
1. Loss of velocity for no additional gain.
2. Flash in sightline at night.
If my choice based on those two reasons are not agreeable to you, that is fine. I personally am happy with my choice. You are allowed to be happy with your comparison.
Already two of us feel differently than you. Me and him. So, that's 2 to 1.
Now.....go call someone else out.

Re: LCR Fail
Some of you folks are making me worry. I have my sights set on a S&W airweight in .357. Reading some of these posts about how the caliber is punishing in small framed revolvers is giving me pause. I think I saw one in the "rent-a-gun" cabinet at Bullet Trap. I may take it for a test ride before plunking down the 700 bucks for it. The idea of a lightweight carry weapon with a heavy hitting round was real appealing to me. Some of you folks are changing my mind.

I have never tried this experiment. I have fired ported barrels, just never in the dark. I figured it would create a "night blindness" issue. Your saying it does not?bronco78 wrote:Shoot them side by side at night, and then I would love to hear your opinion.. OK, so you have never fired a ported snubbe at night, Got it. Thanks, I was pretty sure thats what I was getting from you.AEA wrote:You did not misunderstand my response.

If I say please will you tell us what your thought were on this? I had always just assumed the flash would cause a problem. What were your thoughts on it?bronco78 wrote:OK, so you have never fired a ported snubbe at night, Got it. Thanks, I was pretty sure thats what I was getting from you.

Re: LCR Fail
Im saying I have, and I don’t find ANY difference in loss of night vision from firing either one.. It makes no difference,, the flash from either causes the SAME loss of night vision.03Lightningrocks wrote:I have never tried this experiment. I have fired ported barrels, just never in the dark. NOW I to dislike the ported snubbies for other reasons, .
1:They spit stuff at you
2: They have some loss of velocity.
BUT the second one is really a red hearing.. at SD snubbie engagement distances, the .357 with typically SD loads is going to do just fine.
My point was and is.. “Flash” from a 3” or so snubbie with or without porting at night is not a valid concern IMHO having actually shot both at night.
Was not , nor am now trying to pick a fight

Let me tell you about 158 gr Remington "White Tail" loads in a scandium framed .357 snubbie....... viewtopic.php?p=490416#p490416snatchel wrote:Blazer 158 gr .357

Homey don't play that anymore.
Good on you for the Ruger. I keep telling myself I'm going to pick one of those babies up some day. I own a S&W 640 which would be similar except for the enclosed hammer design, and I think it is about the perfect kit gun, except for one thing.......and that is the enclosed hammer design. The gun was originally purchased for carry, and is kind of heavy to carry all day for only 5 rounds of ammo. But as a kit gun, having the Single Action option would make it perfect for that. If I were going to replace it, it would be with a SP101.
BTW, I kept my eyes peeled for a blue Chevy all the way to California. Never saw one.

Re: LCR Fail
Hahaha. Good story TAM. Shooting the full house loads out of a 24 oz SP101 wasn't a great, pleasurable experience. I think I will pass on shooting them out of a 13 oz wheelie.
Looks like we settled on the same carry ammo though. I've read a lot of stories about the hornady stuff liking to expand, even out of short barrels.
You didn't see me? I kept an eye out for a pathfinder too- no luck. Oh well. We will be in DFW next month visiting friends, maybe we can meet up for some range time.

Go ahead and get the .357 snubbie. You can always switch to lighter .357 loads or even .38+P loads for comfort. But def get the option so that you can shoot .357 if so desired. I'll tell you now that as unpleasant it is to shoot full house loads, it is reassuring. If you have the option to buy 2, get a 38+P rated snubbie and a heavier SP101 or GP100 type fr heavier .357 loads. I didn't have that option, so I compromised some added weight on a Heavier frame. Don't see myself pocket carrying the SP, but it carried nicely appendix and I would say its equivelant to concealing my Glock26.

Re: LCR Fail
Thanks for the share. I slipped the .357 airweight into my pocket at the gun store and it felt as if it was not there. I could not believe it. I could easily pocket carry or IWB carry that piece. My main carry is a PM9 and that airweight would be as easy to conceal as my PM9.snatchel wrote:03Lightening--
