My complete (I think) Mossberg 500

Post by daniel2002p »

I recently bought a Mossberg 500 and wanted a few things differen on it. To be honest I go for function over form so for me everything on it is for function. I added the heat shield mainly because it has ghost sights on it which are quite surprisingly accurate and it allows me my favorite 6 o'clock hold.

Next for home protection I added a LED flashlight which I mounted on the mag tube with a detachable mount I got from Amazon. It has 5 modes but I only plan on using the brightest setting which is 300 lumens or so and nice and bright. The switch is on the back makes it easy to toggle on and off without removing my hand from the pump.

Finally I bought a saddle ammo carrier which just attaches without any tools and just like everything on the shotgun can be removed on the fly. Thus was was from Amazon as well and I'm digging it.

Just wanted to show it off that's all.

1)Treat firearms as if they are loaded. 2)Point the muzzle away from non-targets.
3)Keep fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot. 4)Be sure of your target and backstop.

Nice. Looks clean and simple. How do you like the sights? Have you shot it with them? I've always wondered if a rear sight on a shotgun is really useful.

Yep I put about 100 shells through this since putting them on. They are pretty accurate out pretty far and it gives me a 6 o'clock hold which I prefer.

Question from a newbie...I know you can put slugs down a regular barrel, but do they affect it adversely over time? A would you (or why would you) choose slugs over 00 buck? :headscratch

I also have a Mossberg 500 with an 18" barrel. I have a 28" barrel for non home defense, so I wouldn't put slugs through it most likely.

Nice looking rig BTW.

Ah the elegance of simplicity! Your gun has all that is needed without being overloaded good job. :thumbs2:

Mike Stone - - - the slugs are made from soft lead just like the 2/0 Buckshot so, there is no harm done to the barrel using them. They are slightly undersized to allow them to pass through most chokes without drama. A load of buck is a 35 yard or less proposition; a slug, with practice, will double that distance plus. The sabot slugs require a rifled barrel or rifled choke tube to work properly.

That is exactly where I bought it, cheaper than dirt store here in Ft. worth. It was $14.99 on sale when I bought it.

Thanks MoJo. Great info on this site! I think I'll stay with the 00 buckshot...my foyer isn't 35 yards or longer!! ;-)

That is a very efficient looking set up, everything you need, not much you don't.

I just went through an interesting learning process regarding HD ammo. I got to reading various articles online, http://ammo.ar15.com/project/Self_Defen ... /index.htm which led me to http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs10.htm. I commend them to the attention of anyone who is planning on a shotgun in the HD role.

From the articles, it appears that No. 1 buckshot is the ideal balance of penetration, lethality, pattern, and such like considerations. After some investigation, I located a supply of No. 1 buckshot, which isn't easy. I wanted Federal Tactical Buckshot. The LE132-1B round is a low-recoil load that uses Fed's FliteControl wads filled with #1 Buck. GT Distributors in Austin has it for $2.99 a 5-pack.

I soon acquired a supply of the Federal No. 1 buckshot low recoil flight control ammo and went out to a local range to give it a go. The range report can be found at http://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/ ... 5380081003. I also found a Box o' Truth report on the same ammo at that site.

One thing I did notice is that out to about 20 yards, there isn't much of a pattern at all, just a huge, nasty hole in the paper more than 1" in dia! You do not want to be on the receiving end of those babies!
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
