Father accidentally kills 7yo son at gun store..

Post by OldCannon »

This is so sad, and so many negligent errors on the part of the father. He's going to have to live with this for the rest of his life.

Loaded gun.
Barrel pointed wrong direction.
Finger on the trigger.

Everything can change in an instant, folks. Don't forget. Ever.
I don't fear guns; I fear voters and politicians that fear guns.

Sad. But when you break three of the four rules, these things can happen. This is what the rules are there to prevent.

1. Treat every gun as if it is loaded.
2. Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
4. Know your target and what is behind it.

Sounds like he violated 1-3 and paid the ultimate price.

No, he will be paying the ultimate price for the rest of his days. The pain and sorrow of losing a child never goes away.

This stuff drives me absolutely crazy.
A man’s handgun went off
Handguns don't "go off". Humans make mistakes and fire the weapon.
[the father] reached to put the handgun in the center storage console when it fired
Handguns don't "fire". They are fired.

The media does this all the time. They use the passive voice making the person sound like a disinterested third party while the gun becomes an animate object, "going off" and "firing" without any input from humans.
Loughrey told them he didn’t realize there was a bullet still in the chamber.
Mistake number one. EVERY gun is loaded. The rest is part of a failure chain induced by poor gun handling that has never been corrected. This is negligent homicide, pure and simple. Rather than feel sorry for the father, I'd like to grab him by the scruff of the neck, shake him hard and scream, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?"

Those 4 simple, simple rules. It's not complicated or difficult. Read them, memorize them, live them always.

These stories really break my heart because it's so preventable.

God be with this family.

And of course the gun store gets featured prominently for plenty of guilt by association, even though the venue was actually a car.

Someone will most certainly use the shooting happening at a gun store as justification for banning them from proximity to schools, etc.

Seems to me we should ban cars near schools.

I don't think I could live with that.

I'm sure the father, in an attempt to "atone for his sin", will become a spokesman for the Brady Bunch. After all, "A gun killed his son".

I hope not, but I have been learning alot lately how we are not responsible for our own actions...
I just hope that this man learns from his mistakes, and can eventually find a way to live with himself after this horrible tragedy.
