That's because the emphasis on gun control is control and not reducing violence or deaths. As far as listening to professionals, that never happens either as you said. If it did, instead of personally looking at pictures to determine what to ban, politicians would at least have taken advice from law enforcement, military, firearms instructors, etc. on what types of weapons were most dangerous, if a ban would have any effect, etc. As it is, Congress has a steady flow of "experts" testifying on numerous issues all the time, except on the subject of guns.
