Russell wrote:I went there to get a new set of license plates today and noticed it was posted 30.06 by the door. It is my understanding that the building has no court rooms in it, and is basically just used as office space for various county services. The only section I could find under the penal code that somewhat matched their 30.06 sign is:
(c) A license holder commits an offense if the license holder intentionally,
knowingly, or recklessly carries a handgun under the authority
of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, regardless of
whether the handgun is concealed, at any meeting of a governmental
entity.

But I certainly was not attending a meeting of a governmental entity to get new license plates.

So, would you guys consider it to be a valid posting or not?

government meetings are not off-limits unless 30.06 posted;

If you were not attending a meeting then 30.06 would not apply, as it is a government entity that cannot otherwise post.

Invalid. Even if that's where the governmental bodies do meet, a building is not a meeting.

Mr. Cotton has a thumbtacked thread where he asks us to post examples of government entities improperly posting 30.06 signs. It isn't locked, so I assume he is still stockpiling ammo for the 2009 legislative session. You should go there and post this so he has it available with all the other examples. The link is:

As for the court room/offices/premises business, this gets discussed periodically. Due to the fact that the definition of premises includes "or a portion of a building," I tend to think the intent was to make only the courtroom and court offices off-limits (when they occupy only a portion of the building), otherwise it wouldn't make sense (to me anyway) to include such a phrase in the definition. However, I know of no definitive, absolute clearcut resolution of this.
