Went there the other night, as they were the only place in D/FW that had the Carhartt clothing I needed...

As I approached door, square in the middle at eye leve a 8x11 sign on fluorescent Orange paper said...

"You must check all weapons, handguns, rifles at the door. No Exceptions"

"Legally licensed CHL holders do not need to check their concealed weapons, unless at some point they need to display their weapon."

I completely understand the policy on checking the weapons.
However I *appreciate* the bold clarification of who it does NOT apply to. (ala Bass Pro)

I visit this location often. I have bought a couple of guns there, and I buy my primers and powder there for reloading.

Yep, of the several such stores in this area, SW is the first "go to" place for me. When they first opened though, I recall many times there were more employees than customers - and wondered how they could stay in business. But glad to see 'em hanging tough. And on our side with the signs!

I believe that on my first visit there (post CHL) the signage was very different. No CHL exception (this was only about two years ago).

That kept me out of there for quite some time. Returned recently--and liked the change. Now I can go back.

I go there all the time and you are right the CHL welcome piece wasn't there until about 3-4 months ago. I always ignored the sign since it wasn't 30.06 compliant anyway, but my guess is some CHL holder complained and they changed it. I have always found them to be a very good place to deal with.

yeah, that place rules. I live pretty close to there, so I head there as often as need/time permits. still buy most of my range ammo at WalMart (prices), but I go to the SportsMan for, I dunno, everything else.
bought my 20rd mag for my Beretta there. I like the amount of pistols they often have there, and they are more than willing to let you handle anything behind the counter.
I think the sales guys get a little miffy with "browsers," but I don't take it personally.

If you watch their sales you can get good prices on guns there too. I bought my Glock 22 there for $475. They were the cheapest around at the time (except for maybe at a gun show).

I like the store, but they're a bit overpriced on most of their stuff.

I like SW. I saw a similar sign (exempting CHLs from gun check requirements as long as their pistol remains concealed) at the local store.

I first visited a Sportsman's Warehouse in the Denver area when I was there on a business trip, and the guy behind the gun counter was friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable, even after I told him I was from TX . . . he said that if there was some pistol I wanted, they'd be happy to ship it to a dealer in my area for transfer.

When one opened up just north of Austin, I found the same courteous service - MUCH better than at least some of the local "small dealers" certain people say we should all support.

One day I went there to check out their prices on J-frames . . . it just so happened they 1) had the best price in town on an S&W 340SC; 2) had an additional 5% discount due to "customer appreciation days:" and 3) Discover Card was running a 5% discount promotion on purchases of "sporting goods" . . . so I went out with what has become my "always" gun. (Salesman knew NICS didn't apply if you had a CHL . . . they ARE well trained. )

A while later, I got a $10 gift certificate in the mail from them . . . ended up applying it toward a Wheeler gunsmithing screwdriver kit which at the time was priced less than most online merchants to begin with.

you know, I went in there on Monday, and unfortunately, it was right before they were closing, so I didn't have much time.
even still the guys behind the counter helped me pick through some ammo, and let me see the physical difference between the Gold Dots and the Hydrashocks and what-have-ya.
it was cool.

I still do WalMart for range ammo, though.

Casselthief, If you are close to Sportsmans Wharehouse in Lewisville, you are also close to Academy. I have found that they have prices on ammo about as good or sometimes better than Walmart and there is always someone at the counter to help you. Academy is on the east side of 35 just south of Hebron.

however!
Academy doesn't have bupkiss in the way of ammo, least not for me to check out. it's not worth getting on the dreaded I35 to go look at the same ammo they have at WallyDorfs.

and I've noticed some Good ol' Boy isms at Academy. I did, however have one ol' guy that was nice and very helpful.
but on the whole, since I'm not in the club, I get ignored, or told to (and I quote) "Juss buy sumpin' and go on."

I have a phrase for that, but I can't say it here....

I've obviously had a different experience. They have always been real helpful with me. Sorry you didn't have the same.

On the other hand, I can never seem to find anyone to help me a Wally World and have on occasion had to wait forever while the one guy who was available spent ages with other customers while ignoring me. So I tend to avoid buying ammo at Wally world.

At least one place works for you and one works for me so all is good.

That sounds familiar. I had no bullets and no time to spare this morning on the way to an IDPA match and stopped at Wally World to pick up some cheap ball ammo. There is never anyone at the counter, no matter which store and what time of day you go there. I walked in circles around the counter where they keep the bullets and finally after asking the 4th worker (from some other department) to page someone to the sporting goods counter, someone showed up. It's like they HAVE to sell gun stuff, but don't really WANT to.
