I am no expert on powder but I don't think it would have to spark. The tip of a drill bit can get pretty darned hot and at the point it penetrates the brass, air combined with the extreme heat of the bit, might just be enough to do it. I have watched drill bits get so hot they start smoking.

Except that brass is soft, and cartridge casings are relatively thin. The bit would have to be rally dull to heat up that much before it punched through.

I dunno how much heat it would take or what kind of bit. I do know that I won't be doing this trick at any of my parties.

No kidding... some people's common sense just defies logic... why not use a bullet puller then reseat the bullet... much easier.
